Cambridge is a city located in southern Ontario at the confluence of the Grand and Speed rivers. It is the seat of regional government for the Region of Waterloo, which includes the cities of Kitchener and Waterloo. Cambridge is approximately 100 km (62 mi) west of Toronto and 40 km (25 mi) east of Hamilton.

Historically, Cambridge was part of Grey County. When it was incorporated as a city in 1973, it amalgamated with Galt and Preston, the three largest communities in the county at that time. The new city’s name was chosen by then-mayor Claudette Millar after a nationwide competition to name the new municipality; “Cambridge” was ultimately selected as an allusion to New Cambridge, Massachusetts.

The city is home to the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University, Conestoga College and a number of other smaller colleges. Cambridge is within the Regional Municipality of Waterloo, which was formed in 1973 when it separated from Dufferin County. The city itself is a single-tier municipality, but forms part of the region for provincial and federal representation.

At the time of the 2016 census, the population of Cambridge was 129,920. The Census metropolitan area had an estimated 535,154 residents in 2016, making it Canada’s fifth largest CMA. Between 2011 and 2016 Cambridge was ranked as Canada’s 11th fastest-growing municipality by percentage growth; it was one of only three cities in the country that had a population increase of over 10% during that five-year period.

The land which would become Cambridge was part of a larger parcel purchased from the Six Nations by Colonel Richard Beasley in 1816 for 16,000 pounds (7,200 kg). The town was later named Galt after John Galt of the Canada Company; he was its first postmaster. The first school built there, Galt Grammar School, became Canadian University College and eventually the University of Waterloo. The old post office building is now being converted into a theatre.

In 1851, Galt was incorporated as a village; in 1857 it achieved town status; and in 1915 it was finally incorporated as a city.
