This guide is for anyone who wants to learn more about cannabis vaporizers, regardless of prior experience. By the end, you will know how to pick a vaporizer that fits your needs.
What is vaporizing?
To vaporize cannabis, it must be heated to a certain temperature without igniting the plant material and emitting cancer-causing chemicals.
It can also imply the usage of vape fluids and concentrates, which are not the focus of this post. We do have a variety of devices to consume vape fluids and concentrates if you have any questions, so please get in touch with us and we’ll be able to assist.
What are the benefits of vaporizing cannabis?
Carcinogens are emitted when the temperature reaches 200 C (390 F). If you’re unfamiliar, that’s the point at which your herbe starts to burn. A joint usually burns around 700 C (1300 F), though. Just for reference, CBD and THC – two of the most popular cannabinoids – reach their highest emission levels at 165 C and 175 C respectively. As for combustion, that occurs at 232 Degrees Celsius (or 450 Fahrenheit).
Combustion of cannabis also emits tar and can induce respiratory issues, making smoking unsafe for people with breathing difficulties.
Vaping is also more efficient at extracting cannabinoids and terpenes than combustion, with more than half of the compounds being burned off simply from puffing a joint, and another 15-20 percent burning off between draws.
Due to the milder temperatures utilized in vaporization, a lot more of the cannabinoids and terpenes are preserved, which improves not just the flavor but also any potential benefits of the “entourage effect,” an idea that explains how the cannabinoids and terpenes interact to provide greater overall effects.
You may also personalize the effects vaporization will have on you, with mild ones felt at around 150 C (300 F), standard effects between 180 and 220 C (360 and 430 F), and powerful affects beginning at 180-220 C (360-430 F). I generally stop when the temperature reaches about 200 C (390 F).
Weed Vape Devices
It’s critical to pick the best vaporizer for your needs if you want to vaporize cannabis correctly. Higher-quality vaporizers typically last longer and allow you to extract more from your marijuana. In the end, buying a decent device will save you money.
By purchasing a higher-end device, you will save money in the long run because it extracts tenths of a percent more THC.
Portable devices
Portable devices are ideal for people who want to vape on the move, but they’re also perfect for those who wish to vape at home without having to invest in a desktop device. These range from low-cost gadgets up to higher-end models that are more powerful and yield more buds from your marijuana, both in terms of efficiency and flavor.
If you’re on a budget, the Pulsar APX V3 and Pulsar Flow are both excellent choices. The APX 3 is small and discreet with 4 temperature settings and a “cash” mode for bigger hits or clearing the chamber. Meanwhile, the larger Pulsar Flow provides surprisingly cool vapour thanks to its innovative cooling channels.

The Crafty + and Mighty, created by Storz and Bickel, are usually seen as the best portable dry herb devices. They’re reputed for wrapping up big hits while consistently maintaining high-quality vapor production and fantastic flavor profiles. Even though it’s much bigger than the Crafty+, the Mighty has double the battery capacity plus a temperature control screen. TheCrafty+ comes with two settings that you can change with just push of a button; however, if you want more precision, there is an app available that will allow further changes to be made.
DynaVaps are popular among those transitioning from smoking to vaping, as well as beginners. This is because DynaVaps allow for a gentle session type experience or huge bong filling hit–depending on how you apply the heat.
Unlike the other products in this article, DynaVaps do not have a built-in heat source and must be heated using a lighter (preferably a decent jet style) or an induction heater. I’ll write a separate post about DynaVaps as there is a learning curve that deserves some attention. We sell the devices separately, including the 2021 M, VonG, and Omni. We also have excellent value starter kits available for the 2021 M, VonG, and Omni that come with a device, a carry case with magnet for cooling/keeping the device, and a jet lighter as well as some spare parts.
Desktop devices
Currently, we offer the Storz and Bickel desktop devices, ranging from the Plenty to the Classic and Hybrid Volcano, in our shop. When mobility isn’t a priority, these are the perfect way to enjoy dry herb.
If you’re in the market for a desktop vaporizer but don’t want to spend too much, the Plenty is perfect for you. With an adjustable temperature dial and stainless steel helix whip to cool the vapor, this device will help you get the most out of your dry herb.
The Volcano is a valve-style vaporizer that was originally released by the manufacturer in 1998. The Volcano is one of the most popular and well-known vaporizers on the market, with its design having been copied numerous times since its inception. The Classic, as the name implies, is a classic and is credited with launching virtually every other contemporary vape device. The Classic has a detachable bag that allows for cool vapour to be drawn into the lungs when desired and a rotating knob that adjusts temperature while also providing nine distinct temperature settings.
The Hybrid is the best of the desktop vaporiser models, with a ten-time faster heat-up time than the Classic model. With digital temperate control, app connectivity and it comes with a “whip” so it can be used like a shisha, there’s no reason not to invest in the Hybrid today!
The Arizer Extreme Q is perfect for anyone who wants a desktop vaporizer on a budget! We put it through its paces during testing and were really impressed by how well it performed. It also has some great features, like a remote control and clear bowl so you can see just how much your herbs have degraded.
How Weed Vape Pens Work
There are several ways that vaporizers work, and they all have to do with temperature. Some heat water until it’s close to boiling, while others use hot air or metal. Others still heat the entire chamber.
Whatever the technique, vaporizers heat material to a level that is just high enough to convert it into a vapor without causing too much burn (such as when using joint or smoking cigarettes).
The flame from a lighter is about 450℉ (230°C), but cannabinoids vaporize at 284℉ (140°C) or lower. All that extra heat destroys many of the compounds in your cannabis, so vaporizers help consumers get more bang for their buck, as it were.
Benefits of Vaping over Smoking
More and more people are choosing to vaporize their cannabis, as many benefits come with it. These benefits include:
- Less odor, meaning a more discreet experience
- Users have more control over their high since the temperature and intake levels are adjustable.
Lower temperatures, meaning:
- Inhalation is free of toxic carcinogens that come about from flame combustion
- Inhalation is not as hot or harsh as it would be from a joint, pipe or bong
- More of the desirable compounds (terpenes and cannabinoids) are preserved at lower temperatures. About half of the cannabinoids are burned off when using an open flame!
- A richer, more noticeable flavour as a result of undestroyed terpenes
Different Types of Vaporizers
Tabletop Vaporizers
Tabletop vapes, also known as stationary or desktop vapes, use convection to heat cannabis. A plate is heated, cannabis is added, and the vapor is drawn through one of the methods listed below.
Whips, like the Volcano or Plenty, are the most popular types of tabletop vaporizers. Tabletop vapes come in two distinct designs: whip-style and forced-air. The use of a tube to draw and inhale vapor is characteristic of whip-style vapes. Forced-air vaporizers are more complicated than whipped-style vapes since they employ a fan to blow heat over the cannabis and direct the vapour into a balloon bag or whip attachment. Some desktop vaporizers can accomplish both tasks.
Tabletop vaporizers may not be portable or relatively small, but they have tons of benefits, including:
- Strong and consistent wall-outlet power
- Varying inhale styles (whip, balloon, etc)
- Precise temperature control
- Longer lasting
Portable Flower Vapes
Most flower vapes (or dry herb vaporizers) are designed to work only with cannabis flower, but some devices can also be used as a concentrate vaporizer.
Those who prefer not to smoke cannabis or desire a discreet and low-odor option love vaping pens.
Vaping dry herbs works by heating up cannabinoids and terpenes in a tiny chamber until they become vapor.
A battery, a chamber, and a mouthpiece are all included in these vapes. Cannabis is crushed into smaller particles and put in the chamber, which is then heated and inhaled.
Portable Concentrate Vapes
What are concentrate vapes? To put it simply, these are pens that you can use to vape concentrates.
Unlike dried cannabis flower, which contains mostly needless plant material, cannabis concentrates go through a refining process that eliminates impurities and leaves behind only the most desirable compounds in the cannabis plant. These include cannabinoids and terpenes. Not to mention, ounce for ounce, these concentrations are much more potent than regular old dried weed.
There are several different types of concentrate, including wax, oil, and shatter. Concentrates can be even more refined to produce a less impure extract called distillate. Various vapes exist for each form of concentrate. Some are disposable already filled with substance; others are reusable and may be filled with your choice of substance and recharged. They range in size and shape, some with digital displays, replaceable components or cartridges, depending on the manufacturer.
Portable concentrate vapes are similar to dry flower vaporizers, consisting of a battery, chamber, and mouthpiece. However, they also include an atomizer- a device used to heat and transform liquid into vapor.
Choosing a Vaporizer
Cannabis vaporizers come in all shapes and sizes, so everyone can find one that fits their needs and budget.
